Mad Melon Danfo Driver Biography, Wikipedia, What Killed Mad Melon, How Old Is Mad Melon – Oghenemaro Emeofa, popularly known by his stage name as Mad Melon is a a Nigerian singer and songwriter, one half of veteran Nigerian music duo, Danfo Drivers. Mad Melon moved into the limelight of music after the release of their hit song ”Danfo Drivers” in the early 2000’s. Mad Melon was quite popular back in the mid to late 2000s (2006 to 2009) and his song, kpolongo, was one of my favorite songs in 2007. The music duo became popular in the early 2000s for their unique music style which till date has remained admired by Nigerians.

In the late 90’s to the early 2000’s, the current era of Nigerian pop culture was in its formative phase. Alongside influences of disco, new jack swing and rock ‘n roll, various branches of Nigerian folk governed much of the mainstream in the 80’s and early 90’s. But then, something else happened. Ajegunle artists the likes of Daddy Showkey, Baba Fryo, Daddy Fresh and the duo of Mad Melon and Mountain Black signed to Cornerstone Record owned by Desmond Okenwa made a big impact in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Way back then their music got lots of airplays not withstanding the poor digital management then compared to that of today.


Mad Melon Music Career

To make ends meet Mad Melon and his music gruop had to drove a commercial bus (Danfo) until they were discovered by Cornerstone Music in early 2003.

From being a ‘Danfo’ bus driver that plied the Ojo Road and Mile 2 route, they rose to become one of Nigeria’s best music duo and international stars to come out of Ajegunle.

Their hit ‘I Am a Danfo Driver, was chosen alongside 2baba’s ‘African Queen’ as the soundtracks in the Hollywood movie, Phat Girlz.

Pushing to make their dreams come true, the music duo later had problems with their marketer and Cornerstone Records on this they managed to release two albums; Danfo Driver (2003) and Danfo Travel: Success Story (2005).
I Am a Danfo Driver, Suo,’ was one of the Nigerian songs selected for Phat Girlz and ‘i’ the lead single from their sophomore album also led them on a European tour. Their lives changed forever and they never remained the same.

While reports had it that they got undercut for their first album, they finally cut ties with Cornerstone Records after the release of Danfo Travel. In 2014, they told Vanguard that Cornerstone Records permitted their marketer to pirate their albums and that Cornerstone Records didn’t promote them enough.

The music duo made history as the first Nigerian artistes to have their track used as a soundtrack in a Hollywood movie.

Mad Melon Death

On September 26, news broke out that Nigerian top star, Mad Melon has passed away after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. Mad Melon died on Wenesday 26 2019 at Tolu Medical Centre Hospital in Ajegunle, Lagos. The news of his death was made known to the public by his management in an official statement.


It reads…

“The Management of Mad Melon and Mountain Black aka Danfo Driver wishes to announce to the general public the passing on to glory of Oghenemaro Henry Azubuike Emeofa aka Mad Melon which sad event took place last night.

“A mighty Iroko and a true legend has fallen. May God grant his family, groupmate (Mountain Black) well-wishers and friends the fortitude to bear the loss. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,
