Free State Stars attacker Sinethemba Jantjie, 30, has died in a horrific car crash in Bethlehem, Free State in the early hours of Monday morning, the club has confirmed.
It is the second time a Stars player’s life is taken on the road in nearly four years following the passing of Bafana Bafana attacker Richard Henyekane. And this comes just months after Jantjie had secured a move to Johannesburg having agreed to a pre-contract with Bidvest Wits.
Jantjie joined Ea Lla Koto in 2016 from Mbombela United and immediately took the Premier League by storm with his quick pace and ability to create something out of nothing – catching the eye of some of the top clubs in the top flight.
When Wits announced in January this year that the speedy winger would be joining them as of July 1 as a free agent, it really came as no surprise.
Stars had also been keen to hold on to their talisman but were unable to convince him to stay at Goble Park a little longer.
New coach Nikola Kavazovic took the brave decision to continue to plan around Jantjie despite confirmation that he was leaving the club at the end of the season. As a result, prior to his death on Monday morning, the player had made 23 appearances in all competitions this season and scored four goals.
The club has since confirmed his passing on their official Twitter account.
