This movie is the third installment in the Jurassic World trilogy will hit theaters on June 11, 2021. According to reports Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce, as will Colin Trevorrow, who previously directed 2015’s Jurassic World. Trevorrow will also handle the new film’s writing duties alongside series newcomer Emily Carmichael, who cowrote the upcoming Pacific Rim Uprising, which hits theaters March 23.
Considering the dumbfounding success of Jurassic World — $652 million domestic (including a record-breaking $208 million opening weekend at the time), $1.67 billion worldwide — it makes sense that Universal would want to strike while the iron is hot. But for the sake of building anticipation for Fallen Kingdom, maybe the studio could’ve waited just a little longer before making Jurassic World 3‘s release date public?
Based on the two Fallen Kingdom trailers that Universal has released so far, viewers should prepare to see the island get reduced to a post-apocalyptic hellscape via massive volcano. That alone gives the upcoming sequel a sense of peril and finality; similarly, the first Jurassic World had a tidy conclusion and could exist as a standalone film. Why not tease that feeling of finality a little longer to entice more viewers into the theater? Obviously, Fallen Kingdom will make a ridiculous amount of money no matter what, but letting viewers suspend their disbelief that this film is just a way to usher in the series’ final act could go a long way in drumming up some extra hype.
