Trippie Redd Tells Vic Mensa to Pull Up for Dissing XXXTentacion at BET Awards 2018 Cypher
Vic Mensa has addressed criticism of a BET Hip-Hop Awards performance last weekend in which he called out XXXTentacion and his supporters. The alleged content of the freestyle—set to air with the full awards show on October 16—came to light via X collaborator DJ Scheme, who tweeted on Sunday (October 7), “How u gone say ‘Your favorite rapper is an abuser’ and then follow it with a line saying ‘some shit X some shit so I won’t live long.’”
Mensa responded Monday night with a video reaffirming his criticism of X’s champions. He also offered condolences to X’s mother, Cleopatra Bernard, who was in attendance when the pre-recorded freestyle aired. “Domestic & sexual abuse are not excusable because you have talent or you are troubled,” Mensa wrote in the caption. “I had no idea a grieving mother would be in the audience to honor her lost son,” he adds in the video. “However, I vehemently reject the trend in hip-hop of championing abusers, and I will not hold my tongue about it.” Watch it in full below.
Mensa later shared misogynistic messages his associates received following the backlash, writing on Instagram, “These kids are taught that this mentality is ok by their abusive heroes and normalize this shit. I CALL BS!”
