Ghana education system has changed outstandingly since after its colonization by the British in 1957. In Ghana Small universities are, merged and incorporated as affiliated institutions into larger institutions, and most higher education institutions are named “university college”. The country’s colleges which are incorporated with universities are listed as “university college”. The country’s “polytechnics” are also listed. Ghana as a country has over 17 accredited University which are fully in function. In this article we are going to list down the biggest and largest universities currently. But first lets explain to you what a university means.
The word “university” is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means “community of teachers and scholars”
A university can be defined as an institution of higher education and research which awards academic degrees in various academic disciplines. Universities typically provide undergraduate education and postgraduate education.

Founded in August 11, 1984, The University of is the oldest and largest of the thirteen Ghanaian public universities in Ghana. The university is mainly based at Legon, about 12 kilometres northeast of the centre of Accra.
Its medical school is in Korle Bu, with a teaching hospital and secondary campus in the city of Accra. It also has a graduate school of nuclear and Allied Sciences at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, making it one of the few universities on the Africa continent offering programs in nuclear physics and nuclear engineering. As of July 2016, The university had about 39, 249.
Kwame Nkrumah University is the second biggest and largest university in Ghana. Established in 1952, Kwame Nkrumah University is a university in Kumasi, Ashanti, Ghana. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is the public university established in the country, as well as the largest university in Kumasi Metropolis and Ashanti. The Kumasi College of Technology opened officially on 22 January 1952 with 200 teacher training students transferred from Achimota, to form the nucleus of the new college. In October 1952, the School of Engineering and the Department of Commerce were established and the first students were admitted. A Pharmacy Department was established in January 1953, with the transfer of the former School of Pharmacy from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, to the college. As of 2016, Kwame Nkrumah University had about 42, 590 students.
University of Cape Coast makes the list of the number 2 of top largest university in Ghana. Founded in 1962, out high demand for highly qualified and skilled manpower in education. It was established to train graduate teachers for second cycle institutions such as teacher training colleges and technical institutions, a mission that the two existing public universities at the time were unequipped to fulfill. The University of Cape Coast has two campuses: the Southern Campus (Old Site) and the Northern Campus (New Site). Two of the most important historical sites in Ghana, Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, are only a few kilometers from the university. University of Cape Coast has over 70, 000 undergraduate student and 10,000 post graduates.
University Of Education Winneba is the fourth biggest university in Ghana. Established in 1992. The main reason why the University of Education Winneba was founded was to train teachers for the education system of Ghana. The University of Education, Winneba is charged with the responsibility of teacher education and producing professional educators to spearhead a new national vision of education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s efforts along the path of rapid economic and social development. University of Education Winneba has over 60, 000 student with twenty-nine academic departments and centres, seven faculties. It also has 18 distance education regional study centres throughout Ghana.
Ashesi Univeristy makes the list of Top 10 largest and biggest university in Ghana. The institution which is now regarded as the most beautiful university in Ghana was established in 2002. The University is recognized for its excellent graduate placement, with almost 100% graduates receiving job offers, starting businesses or entering graduate school within six months of graduation. Ashesi’s graduates are considered as some of the most career-ready in Africa, and are ranked among the best educated in the world by employers. We don’t have the full record of the number of students in Ashesi University.
Christian Service University College is the number six on our list of top most biggest universities in Ghana. Established in 1974, The Christian Service University College Ghana is one of the university colleges accredited by the National Accreditation Board in the past decade. It is also accredited by the Accrediting Council for Theological Education in Africa. It is affiliated to the University of Ghana and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. It is located in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana. Christian Service University College has 30 academic and 55 administrative and support staff. The student population has now increased into the thousands.
The seventh on our list is the University For Development Studies Ghana. University For Development Ghana has four campuses across the regions in Ghana. Established in 1992 as a multi-campus institution. University For Development is the fifth public university to be established in Ghana. This deviates from the usual practice of having universities with central campuses and administrations. It was created with the three northern regions of North Ghana in mind. These are the Northern Region, Upper East Region and the Upper West Region. It was founded by PNDC Law 279 to blend the academic world with that of the community in order to provide constructive and meaningful interaction between the two for the total Development of Northern Ghana, in particular, and Ghana as whole. It began academic work in September 1993 with the first batch of thirty-nine (39) students admitted into the Faculty of Agriculture, (FOA), Nyankpala.
The eight biggest university in Ghana on our list is the Valley View University. It was established 1979. Valley View University is a private university located in Oyibi, Accra in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It forms part of a worldwide system of over 100 tertiary institutions operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world’s second largest Christian school system. Valley View University is affiliated with Griggs University (GU) in distance learning.
University of Mines & Technology is the 9th largest university in Ghana on our List. First established in 1952 as the Tarkwa Technical Institute and consequently in 1961, the university was changed to the Tarkwa School of Mines to help train manpower for the mining industry in Ghana. University of Mines & Technology became a faculty of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 1976. On 1 October 2001, UMaT was elevated to university college status and was known as the Western University College of KNUST. The University of Mines & Technology is located at Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana.
And finally the tenth biggest and largest university in Ghana is the Presbyterian University College. Established in November 23 2003, The Presbyterian University College Ghana is partially private & public university located at Abetifi-Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It is one of the new universities in Ghana granted accreditation by the National Accreditation Board. It is owned by The Presbyterian Church Of Ghana.
